Awareness Inserts – In 2009, Colon STARS developed wallet-si ze cards outlining colon cancer screening guidelines and symptoms.Within one month, Bartell’s drugs distributed 50,000 of these cards, one with each prescription filled at Bartell’s pharmacies in March of 2009.  Costco followed suit and in March of 2010, they too began the distribution of one screening card in each prescription that was filled that month.  Between every Bartells and Costco pharmacy in the state of Washington, this brought the distribution total for the month of March to roughly 300,000 cards!  In March of 2011, Colon STARS continued to expand this program by distributing Spanish versions of the cards to Hispanic Health organizations in over 10 states, and by providing an on-line ordering capability.

Grant Programs - In 2010, Colon STARS partnered with the Washington State Department of Health and the Colorectal Task Force to provide grants to improve screening rates to the Inland Northwest Health Service of Spokane County and Clallam Country’s Colon Health Outreach and Screening Promotion Project.

Living with Colorectal Cancer Support Group - Colon STARS hosts the only colorectal cancer support group for patients and caregivers in the Seattle area.

Dress in Blue Day - Dress in Blue Day for colon cancer awareness, started by Colon STARS founder Anita Mitchell, began at Holy Rosary School in West Seattle..  Students were asked to wear blue, and donate $1 each, for the inaugural day in March 2006.  In 2009, Colon Stars partnered with the Colon Cancer Alliance and Dress In Blue Day became a national activity.

Mercer Island Rotary Awareness and Half Marathon - The Rotary Club of Mercer Island is a service organization with an interest in increasing the public’s awareness about preventing colon cancer.  They hold an annual Half Marathon that is dedicated to colon cancer awareness and prevention, with all proceeds benefitting Colon STARS.  A special awareness Expo is held as part of the Half Marathon, including a “blue” hill, where people can donate a flag for the cause.   In 2011, the Half Marathon attracted 5,000 runners.

Speakers and Event Attendance - Colon STARS supports workshops and events focused on colon cancer awareness and support, such as the Learn at Lunch Workshop in Yakima.
